Today, I observe in quiet reflection.
Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the visible and invisible battles tied to service. While I did not deploy beyond U.S. soil, I’ve witnessed firsthand the toll that military life can take—mentally, emotionally, and generationally.
SGT Marquise Daniels, my first cousin, is one of those brave individuals. I had the privilege of watching him grow from a determined child into a dedicated soldier and resilient man. His progression in arms reflects the strength of his character, and I am profoundly proud of the service he continues to render—despite the personal battles he faces.
We are part of a legacy of military service. Our grandfather- Allen P. Daniels, my great uncle- J.C. Bush, and my elder cousin- Sammie (Bo) Walker served before us and laid the foundation for a tradition of sacrifice and honor. That legacy continues in our generation through service members like SGT Jarret Ferguson, Airman Sarne Bush, SPC Tijena Woods, SPC Moesha Woods, and myself, SPC Joshuanna Woods.
Today, I honor not only those who gave their lives in service, but also those who returned home carrying burdens unseen. Their courage, often silent, deserves our recognition just as much as their sacrifice.
To those we’ve lost, and to those still enduring the cost of service—your strength is not forgotten.
